Getting to Know Laura Ashwood

Laura Ashwood writes sweet, small town romance stories. When she’s not writing, she enjoys spending time with their children and grandson, cooking, fishing, watching Food Network, and reading. You can learn more about Laura and her books here.

Where did you grow up, and where do you live now? Tell us something a lot of people don’t know about your home town.
I grew up in North Dakota for the most part, we moved quite a bit when I was young. I now live in rural Minnesota about 20 miles from town. The closest store/gas station is 18 miles away and there is no WiFi available (the horror!) at our home.  My hometown (in ND) has doubled it’s population since I was born and it has the only asymmetrical state building in the US.

What is your favorite part about writing Sweet Romance/ Cozy Mysteries?
Romance that focuses on the emotional relationships between the characters has always resonated well with me. I love a happy ending and I love being able to develop good relationships with my characters. There is so much negativity and angst in our world right now. Writing sweet romance gives me a happy place to go for a few hours at a time and it’s my hope that it takes my readers to that happy place too.

Who or what inspired you to become an author?
I have wanted to be an author since I read my first book. It’s taken most of my life to get up the nerve to follow that dream, but I am blessed to have made it come true.

If you weren’t an author, what would you be doing?
If I was younger, I would love to go into a career in forensics. But, I am an executive administrative assistant in my day job and am ok with that. I get to be anything I want when I’m writing and it works for me. Maybe someday I can write full time.

Do you have any pets? Please tell us about them!
Yes! I have two incredibly spoiled Chihuahuas, Pippin and Gus. They couldn’t be more different. Gus is the yellow one and he is my constant companion. He HAS to have a lap, where Pippin is content to sit beside me. Gus was a short-term Instagram celebrity, having over 10,000 followers at one point until it got to be too much like work and not much fun for either of us. He still loves to be a ham for the camera though. I don’t know what I would do without them.

Have you found your own real life happily ever after?
Yes! I am so fortunate! I was in an incredibly abusive relationship in my 20s. I met my husband shortly after I left that part of my life. He was incredibly patient and was content to just be friends for a couple of years while I tried to heal. When our relationship progressed, he was instrumental in helping me work through PTSD. He became an adoptive father to my two children and I became a step-mom to his two. He is my best friend and partner in every way. I KNOW what the other side looks like and am so blessed to have the man I have in him.

What is one book that impacted or changed your life that you think everybody should read? Tell us about it.
It’s really quite an unusual choice for a book recommendation – but Beauty Fades, Dumb is Forever by Judge Judy Sheindlin is what I attribute to giving me the strength to flee my abusive relationship. It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover is another book I would heartily recommend, along with Knit Together (Discover God’s Pattern for Your Life) by Debbie Macomber.
