An Interview with Christina Butrum
Where did you grow up, and where do you live now? Tell us something a lot of people don’t know about your hometown.
I grew up in a small Iowa town, Webster City, and still live here today. One thing a lot of people don’t know about Webster City is that our movie theater was saved by volunteers and donations. The small town vibe is strong, and we do whatever we can to make things happen.
A lot of this vibe is carried into the stories I write. I love writing about the small town “feel” and making sure my readers understand why my characters love the small town life.
What is your favorite part of writing Sweet Romance?
Sweet romance has always been a favorite of mine. I think it’s because of the positive vibes and knowing there will always be a happy ever after. It makes writing these stories that much sweeter.
Who or what inspired you to become an author?
Story ideas would randomly pop into my thoughts and play out like a scene from a movie. My imagination was hard at work when I had no idea what would happen next. Jotting down my thoughts in a notebook soon turned into telling my first story, and continued on from there to where I am now.
If you weren’t an author, what would you be doing?
I work full time in Accounts Payable, so I imagine I would be focusing on that. Otherwise, maybe teaching or motivational speaking. That would be fun!
Do you have any pets? Please tell us about them!
I have two dogs –
Emmie Mae – a Black Lab mix who weighs 100 pounds and eats everything in sight! She’s going on 4 yrs old and there’s never a dull moment in our house with her! From her smiles to her demanding attention, we love her and it’s safe to say she loves us!
Avery – a Pit/Lab mix who is going on 3 yrs old and a rescue from a local shelter. He’s the baby of the family and demands more attention than Emmie(I never thought that was possible, but he proved me wrong). His high energy keeps us on our toes, but he also has his moments of downtime and “cuddles with mama”.
Have you found your own real life happily ever after?
Yes! I’m so in love with a wonderful man who came into my life when my little girl was only a month old. When I was scared he would leave me, he reassured me that he was here to stay. Twelve years later, we’re more in love than we were in our twenties.
What is one book that impacted or changed your life that you think everybody should read? Tell us about it.
I finished reading The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros last week, and this book has certainly taken the place of a few others I had in mind to share. Although this story is an emotional one, full of rip your heart out moments involving a child’s diagnosis of Neuroblastoma, I would reread it in a heartbeat. This story is one I couldn’t put down. A story of loss and love, overcoming several obstacles when the weight is heavy on your shoulders, and coming out stronger for it. If you decide to read it, grab a box of tissues.
