Elsie Davis discovered the world of Happily-Ever-After romance at the age of twelve when she began avidly reading Barbara Cartland, the Queen of Romance, and has been hooked ever since. After building her dream log home on top of a small mountain, she turned her attention to do what she loves most, writing. An award-winning author, USA Today Bestselling author and active member of RWA, she writes contemporary romance and romantic suspense. She writes from her heart, hoping to share a little love in a big world.
When she’s not writing, she can be found: birding, kayaking, camping, fishing, playing disc golf, and taking nature walks—hoping to spot wildlife. Basically, she loves all things outdoors, EXCEPT cold weather. She and her husband are avid Caribbean cruisers, but Elsie’s favorite vacation was their cruise to Alaska. (In spite of the cold!) Indoors, she enjoys a toasty fire, a glass of red wine, and of course, a great romance with a guaranteed Happily-Ever-After.
An Interview with Elsie Davis
Where did you grow up, and where do you live now? Tell us something a lot of people don’t know about your home town.
I grew up all over the country as an Air Force brat but spent most of time in upstate New York. I currently live in Liberty, NC, a very small town that still has a showcase theater that brings in some big name singers for an intimate setting show. Little Texas is coming next February, and I can’t wait!
What is your favorite part of writing Sweet Romance?
I love creating new characters and seeing where my brain wanders.
Who or what inspired you to become an author?
Many a summer day when I was a teen, I could be found sitting on the library bench and devouring category romance novels. Sometimes as many as six in a day. Yes, I was that introverted and geeky girl who loved to read.
If you weren’t an author, what would you be doing?
I built a log home for retirement and would spend more time enjoying it and the wildlife that come to visit. Oh, and tend my roses better. 😉
Do you have any pets? Please tell us about them!
Hermione, my sweet cat, adopted us one freezing cold night and has been the joy of our lives since. My mother, who lives down the hill, has Draco, another great cat, and Hermione’s best friend. We frequently get them together for playdates and it’s nice when we need to go away on a trip. Built in cat sitting. We do have a lot of lizards here and Hermione, unfortunately, thinks it’s the best treat ever to bring them in the house. We’ve had to find ways around that, but occasionally she still outsmarts us. We even had a little green snake in the house. Once, was more than enough for that!!
Have you found your own real life happily ever after?
I moved to NC with my two young daughters and soon after met a wonderful man. Twenty-four years later, we are still happy and very much in love. The key I believe, was putting each other first, realizing one day the kids would grow up and leave, and when that happened, we needed to still be connected to one another. To have a relationship. So we took time for each other. We have lots in common and do almost everything together, but still allow each other breathing room.
What is one book that impacted or changed your life that you think everybody should read? Tell us about it.
Okay, so this isn’t what you’re looking for, but here’s my answer and why. Hunter in Disguise, by Kathy DiSanto. It’s a funny, light romantic suspense that I could read over and over and never get tired of reading. I aspire for my stories to be the same. Places people can escape from reality for a few hours and fall in love. With the characters. And with the story. Something timeless.
