An Interview with Lindsay Detwiler

Where did you grow up, and where do you live now? Tell us something a lot of people don’t know about your home town.

I grew up in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. My husband grew up here as well. We still live in our hometown. Most people don’t know that Hollidaysburg is where the Slinky is produced.

What is your favorite part of writing Sweet Romance?

I love the focus on the emotional side of love. To me, that is where the true story is—in the complex emotions that surround love. I also really love writing those first kiss scenes; they are always my favorite.

Who or what inspired you to become an author?

I always loved writing. When I was really young, I would fill notebooks and journals with stories and poems. It wasn’t until college that I got serious about chasing my dream of being a published author. I took a class called “The Literature of Health and Healing.” The class was all about chasing your dreams and about how we never know how much time we have left. I went home from one of the evening classes and started writing what would become my first novel, Voice of Innocence.

If you weren’t an author, what would you be doing?

In addition to being an author, I am a high school English teacher. For a while, I also really wanted to be a cosmetologist because I love makeup and beauty products.

Do you have any pets? Please tell us about them!

I have a mastiff named Henry; I am so obsessed with him that he appears in many of my novels. I also have five cats: Marjorie, Arya, Amelia, Tyrion, and Alice. And yes, we are Game of Thrones fans, as you can tell by some of the names.

Have you found your own real life happily ever after?

I met my husband at the age of twelve at the art table in art class. Our teacher set us across from each other on the seating chart, and the rest was history. We’ve been together ever since, growing up together as we grew together. We’ve been married for seven years now. At our wedding, our first dance was Faith Hill’s “Breathe,” which was the first song we danced to in junior high.

What is one book that impacted or changed your life that you think everybody should read? Tell us about it.

I adore Cormac McCarthy’s The Road. It is such a dark tale, but McCarthy paints the picture of a bleak world in such a beautiful, poetic way. He shows us that even in the darkest hour, beauty and connection can be found. It is also a story about a father and son’s love for each other, which I think is a concept worth reading about. The book focuses on a post-apocalyptic world and asks the question: When all social constructs are gone, what actually matters?
